This is the Hayward filter head with vent valve, part number ECX1131P, molded in platinum. It is listed as a Perflex EC30 and EC40 DE filter part.

Color and part number

Hayward builds the same head in two colors and separates them with a single letter. ECX1131P is the platinum head, and dropping the P gives the ivory one. Order by the color of the filter you have rather than by the number alone.

Vent valve

The head carries the air relief vent valve, the fitting opened on start up to purge air from the tank. Air trapped above the element makes the filter run rough and the pressure gauge read badly, so a vent valve that no longer seals or no longer opens is worth attention in its own right.

When to replace the head

A filter head is a pressure part. Once it has cracked or is weeping at a seam it is replaced, not repaired, because a patched pressure vessel is a hazard on a running system.
