What the front housing does
The front housing is the front half of the wet end. It holds the strainer basket and carries the suction and discharge connections, so it takes the full pressure of the system and every knock at the equipment pad. Once it cracks or the port threads give up, the pump draws air, loses prime and can run dry, and no amount of new lid o-rings will fix it.

This is the threaded suction version, so check what your pump has at the suction port. The housing is supplied on its own; the strainer basket, the lid and the seals are separate Pentair parts, and a housing swap is a good moment to replace the ones that are already tired.
