What the diffuser does
The diffuser sits directly over the impeller. Water leaving the impeller vanes is moving fast but carries little pressure, and the diffuser is the shaped passage that converts that speed into the head the pump is rated for. It is not a cosmetic housing piece, it is half of how a centrifugal pump works.
Match the rating, not the family name
Diffusers are cut to suit a specific impeller, so the Challenger name alone is not enough. This one covers the 2 HP full rated and 2-1/2 HP up rated High Flow builds. Read the rating off the motor label before you order.
Signs of a worn diffuser
A cracked diffuser or one with a worn throat lets water slip back around the impeller instead of moving on through the system. The pump keeps running and sounds normal, but flow and pressure fall away. If you are already in the wet end replacing an impeller, do the diffuser at the same time.
