What the bag is for
A separation tank sits between a DE filter and the discharge line. When you backwash, the water carries spent diatomaceous earth into the tank, the bag traps the DE and clean water leaves. Everything the tank does depends on that bag staying intact.

The tank shell outlives several bags. The bag itself is the wear item: it loads up, seams give way, and it eventually tears.
