What the separation tank is for
When a D.E. filter is backwashed, the spent powder has to go somewhere. A separation tank sits on the waste line and catches it, so the D.E. can be disposed of properly instead of being flushed into a drain or a yard. The collector bag inside is the piece that actually does the catching.
