What it seals
This o-ring seals the adapter joint on the pump. Like any o-ring on the suction side, it has to stay pliable to hold a seal, and once it flattens or hardens the joint can draw air. A pump that loses prime or holds a stubborn air pocket in the strainer lid often has a hardened o-ring somewhere in the assembly rather than a real leak.
Servicing
Since two are required per pump, replace them as a pair rather than one at a time. A silicone based o-ring lubricant on installation helps them seat and slows the drying that eventually causes the leak.
