What the impeller does

The impeller is what actually moves water. Its vanes are narrow, so debris that gets past the basket lodges in them, and years of running wears the vanes down. Either way the symptom is the same: weak returns, poor skimming, and a pump that sounds normal while shifting far less water than it should.

Fitting it

Impellers are matched to horsepower and rating, so read the pump label instead of going by the size of the motor. Getting the impeller off means disturbing the shaft seal, so replace that at the same time. Reusing an old seal is the usual reason a freshly rebuilt pump starts weeping between the motor and the wet end.
