Why the lid o-ring matters
The strainer pot lid sits on the suction side of the pump, so it is under vacuum rather than pressure while the pump runs. That means a bad seal here does not drip on the pad, it quietly pulls air into the system. The symptoms show up somewhere else: a pump that will not hold prime, air building in the top of the strainer basket, a wobbling pressure gauge or bubbles at the returns.
Fitting it
Wipe the groove and the lid face clean before the new o-ring goes in, then give it a light coat of silicone lubricant. A dry o-ring can roll or pinch as the lid comes down, which puts you straight back to the original problem, and it also tends to weld the lid on so the next basket clean becomes a fight.
