What the volute o-ring seals
The volute is the housing that surrounds the impeller and directs water out of the pump. Its o-ring keeps that joint sealed. Because the pump is under suction on the intake side, a seal that has flattened, hardened or picked up a nick lets air in rather than water out, and the symptom an owner sees is a pump that struggles to prime, holds air in the basket or runs noisily.
