Product details

The Pentair 353625 is the clear plastic lid for 590 series pumps. It seals the strainer pot, the chamber where the pump basket catches debris before it reaches the impeller.

Why lids fail

The pump lid is the most handled part on the equipment pad. It comes off every time the basket is emptied, it sits in direct sun, and it takes chlorinated water and sanitizer splash. Over a few seasons the plastic crazes and clouds, and eventually a hairline crack or a distorted rim appears. From that point the lid no longer seals, the pump draws air on the suction side, and it stops holding prime.

Fitting it

Replace the lid o-ring at the same time. A new lid pressed onto a flattened, hardened o-ring will still leak air. Lubricate the o-ring, set the lid down square, and hand tighten only. Overtightening is the single most common cause of the next cracked lid.

This is the lid. The sealing o-ring is a separate part, and fitting a new one along with the lid is the reliable way to get a clean seal.
Why is my pump losing prime after years of working fine?
A pump lid is opened and closed constantly and sits in sun and chemicals. Crazing, a hairline crack or a distorted rim all let air past, and air on the suction side is what breaks prime.
Should I tighten it hard?
No. Lubricate the o-ring, seat the lid square and hand tighten. Cranking down on a plastic lid is what cracks it.
