The seal that keeps prime
Everything upstream of the impeller is under suction, which means a bad lid seal draws air rather than spilling water. That is why a leaking strainer lid rarely leaves a puddle and often shows up instead as air in the pot, a pump that loses prime, or falling flow. Replacing a hardened or flattened ring is usually the whole repair.
When to change it
Any time the lid comes off for a basket clean is a good moment to look at the ring. If it has taken a permanent set, cracked or gone stiff, replace it rather than dressing it and hoping.
