Product details

The Hayward SPX5500D is the strainer cover kit for the Power-Flo Matrix SP1590 series pump. It comes as the cover, the lock ring and the O-ring together.

Why the whole kit

These three pieces work as one seal. A new cover on a worn lock ring, or a good ring on a hardened O-ring, still leaves a path for air. Replacing them together restores the seal properly and saves a second order two weeks later.

The symptom

Air at the lid rarely shows as a leak, because the pump is pulling on that side rather than pushing. What you see instead is a pump that will not prime, a basket area that never fills completely, or bubbles arriving at the returns. Crazing or hairline cracks in an old cover and a flattened O-ring are the usual causes.

Fitting note

Wipe the sealing groove clean before the new O-ring goes in, and put a light film of pool rated silicone lubricant on it. It seals better and the cover will still come off by hand next season.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

Does the lock ring come with it?
Yes. SPX5500D is a kit with the strainer cover, the lock ring and the O-ring.
Which pump does it fit?
The Hayward Power-Flo Matrix, SP1590 series.
My pump keeps losing prime, is this the fix?
It is one of the first places to look. A cracked or crazed cover, a worn lock ring or a hard O-ring all let air past the lid, and the pump loses prime with no visible leak.
Should I lubricate the O-ring?
A thin film of a pool rated silicone lubricant on the O-ring helps it seal and makes the cover far easier to remove next time.
