The Hayward SPX5500D is the strainer cover kit for the Power-Flo Matrix SP1590 series pump. It comes as the cover, the lock ring and the O-ring together.
Why the whole kit
These three pieces work as one seal. A new cover on a worn lock ring, or a good ring on a hardened O-ring, still leaves a path for air. Replacing them together restores the seal properly and saves a second order two weeks later.
The symptom
Air at the lid rarely shows as a leak, because the pump is pulling on that side rather than pushing. What you see instead is a pump that will not prime, a basket area that never fills completely, or bubbles arriving at the returns. Crazing or hairline cracks in an old cover and a flattened O-ring are the usual causes.
Fitting note
Wipe the sealing groove clean before the new O-ring goes in, and put a light film of pool rated silicone lubricant on it. It seals better and the cover will still come off by hand next season.
