Why a strainer is worth having
Everything the skimmer misses ends up in the suction line. A strainer gives that debris somewhere to stop, in a basket you can lift out and empty, instead of letting it reach the impeller. Clearing a jammed impeller means pulling the pump apart, so the strainer is the cheap part standing between routine maintenance and a real job.
Keeping it working
Check the basket regularly and empty it before it packs solid, particularly through leaf fall. Look at the lid seal each time the strainer is opened, because a strainer that draws air is a common cause of a pump that loses prime.
