The Hayward SP1516 is the economy ABS complete strainer assembly. It is the genuine Hayward part, supplied as the whole assembly.

Why a strainer is worth having

Everything the skimmer misses ends up in the suction line. A strainer gives that debris somewhere to stop, in a basket you can lift out and empty, instead of letting it reach the impeller. Clearing a jammed impeller means pulling the pump apart, so the strainer is the cheap part standing between routine maintenance and a real job.

Keeping it working

Check the basket regularly and empty it before it packs solid, particularly through leaf fall. Look at the lid seal each time the strainer is opened, because a strainer that draws air is a common cause of a pump that loses prime.

What does a strainer do?
It sits in the suction line and traps leaves and larger debris before they can reach the pump impeller, so the pump keeps its flow and does not jam.
How often should the basket be cleaned?
Empty it whenever you can see it filling, and more often in leaf season. A loaded basket starves the pump, which shows up as low flow and a noisy, hot motor.
