Product details

The Hayward SPX1500L is the genuine 1 HP impeller assembly for the Hayward Power-Flo and Matrix pump families. It is the part that actually moves the water, and the part that determines how much of it moves.

The symptom it fixes

A pump with a failing impeller does not sound broken. The motor runs at normal pitch, the basket fills, and yet the returns barely stir the surface. That is because the impeller vanes have worn, or a small piece of debris has lodged in a passage, and the pump has quietly lost most of its output. Before you order, rule out the cheap causes: a packed pump basket, a blocked skimmer and an air leak on the suction side all produce the same complaint.

Match the horsepower

Impellers are horsepower specific. This is the 1 HP part, and fitting a larger impeller to gain flow simply overloads the motor. Check that your pump is the 1 HP model, and check SPX1500L against the diagram for your particular Power-Flo or Matrix pump.

Doing the job

Getting the impeller off means disturbing the shaft seal, so buy the seal with it and fit a fresh one. Doing it in two visits costs the same parts and twice the work.

Will it fit my pump?
It is the 1 HP impeller for the Hayward Power-Flo and Matrix pump families. Impellers are matched to horsepower, so confirm your pump is the 1 HP model and check SPX1500L against the parts diagram for your exact pump before ordering.
Can I fit a larger impeller to get more flow?
No. The impeller has to match the motor horsepower. An oversized impeller loads the motor beyond its rating, which is a good way to cook it.
My pump runs but barely moves water. Is this the part?
It is the most likely one, once you have ruled out a blocked basket, a clogged skimmer and a suction side air leak. A worn or partly blocked impeller is the classic cause of a pump that sounds healthy and pumps almost nothing.
Do I need anything else to do the job?
The shaft seal comes apart when the impeller comes off, so plan on replacing it at the same time. A little silicone o-ring lubricant for the housing seal is worth having on the bench as well.
