This is the genuine Hayward HCXP3000M strainer basket for HCP series pumps. It is the basket that sits in the strainer pot ahead of the impeller.
The job it does
Everything the skimmers and main drain pull in arrives at the pump. The basket is the last chance to stop leaves, hair, grit and the occasional toy before they reach the impeller. A basket doing its job costs you a minute to empty. A basket that has cracked costs an impeller, and often a shaft seal with it.
When to change it
Look for cracks around the rim and for broken slots in the wall of the basket. Both let debris through. It is also worth checking the pump lid o-ring at the same time, because a pot that draws air and a pot that leaks debris tend to be symptoms of the same neglected service.
