Product details

The Hayward SPX4000S is the genuine rubber strainer cover o-ring for Northstar pumps, listed with the Northstar parts for units built from 2008 to current.

The part that causes air leaks

The strainer lid sits at the top of the suction side, which makes it the easiest place for a pump to pull air. The o-ring is what keeps it sealed, and it does not last forever: heat, chlorine and the repeated squash of the lid flatten it, then it hardens and cracks. When that happens the pump struggles to prime, air collects in the basket, and flow drops. Owners often chase the problem into the plumbing when the seal is the whole story.

Fitting it

Clean the groove and the lid face before you seat the new o-ring, and use a silicone based o-ring lubricant. That helps it seat evenly, keeps the rubber supple through the season and stops the lid gluing itself down before the next basket clean.

My pump keeps losing prime. Would this fix it?
Very often, yes. The strainer cover is the highest point in the suction side, so a flattened, cracked or dried out lid o-ring lets air in and the pump loses prime or runs with air in the basket.
