Product details

The Hayward SPX4000TS is the strainer cover T-ring for NorthStar pumps built between 1998 and 2007. It is the genuine Hayward part, molded in rubber, and it is also listed under the number O-510-0.

What a T-ring is

It is the seal between the strainer cover and the pump body, and the T shaped profile is what makes it work. The ring sits in the groove and the flat of the T squares up as the lid comes down, so it holds a seal at low pressure and under vacuum. A round o-ring of the same diameter will not do the same job.

Why they get replaced

Lid seals harden, flatten and split with heat, sun and chemistry. Once that happens air finds its way in on the suction side, and the pump starts losing prime or running with a basket full of bubbles. Clean out the groove, fit the new ring, lubricate it and the problem usually goes with it.

Is SPX4000TS the same as O-510-0?
Yes. Hayward carries this seal under both numbers.
Can I use a plain o-ring instead?
No. A T-ring has a different profile and seats in the strainer cover groove a specific way. A round o-ring will not hold the same seal under the lid.
My pump keeps losing prime. Could this be it?
It is one of the usual causes. When the lid seal hardens or takes a set, air gets past it on the suction side, and the pump loses prime or runs with air in the basket. Clean the groove, fit a new T-ring and lubricate it before you look further.
