The seal that keeps prime
The clear lid on the strainer pot is the one place on the suction side where air can get in without water getting out. That makes the lid O-ring the usual suspect when a pump runs but will not hold prime, when the basket fills with bubbles, or when flow drops off for no obvious reason. A ring that has gone hard, cracked or flat has stopped sealing even if it still looks intact.
Fitting it
Clean the groove and the sealing face before the new ring goes in, and use a thin film of silicone O-ring lubricant. That helps the lid seat evenly, keeps the ring from rolling out of the groove as the lid comes down, and makes the pot easier to open next time.
