Product details

Hayward SPX2300Z4 is the strainer cover O-ring for Max-Flo XL pool pumps. Hayward notes it may also fit other Hayward pump models, so it is worth comparing against the ring you are pulling out.

The seal that keeps prime

The clear lid on the strainer pot is the one place on the suction side where air can get in without water getting out. That makes the lid O-ring the usual suspect when a pump runs but will not hold prime, when the basket fills with bubbles, or when flow drops off for no obvious reason. A ring that has gone hard, cracked or flat has stopped sealing even if it still looks intact.

Fitting it

Clean the groove and the sealing face before the new ring goes in, and use a thin film of silicone O-ring lubricant. That helps the lid seat evenly, keeps the ring from rolling out of the groove as the lid comes down, and makes the pot easier to open next time.

Which pump is this for?
It is designed to fit the Hayward Max-Flo XL. Hayward also notes it may fit other Hayward pump models.
My pump keeps losing prime. Could this be it?
Often, yes. The lid O-ring is the most common source of an air leak on the suction side. Check for bubbles in the strainer basket and look for a ring that is hard, cracked or squared off instead of round.
Do I need lubricant?
A silicone based O-ring lubricant is worth using. It helps the lid seat evenly and stops the ring from rolling or sticking when you open the pot next time.
How often should it be replaced?
Treat it as a wear item. Once it stops springing back when squeezed, or the lid needs excessive force to seal, it is due.
