The Hayward SPX1082Z5B is the pump housing o-ring for the Power-Flo SP-1500 series. It measures 5-1/4 inches inside diameter with a 1/8 inch cross section, in rubber, and is also carried under the o-ring number O-228.
What it does
This seal sits between the strainer housing and the pump, on the suction side of the system. Everything ahead of the impeller is under vacuum when the pump runs, which means a bad seal here does not drip water out, it pulls air in. That is why the symptoms are so often misread: the pump primes slowly or not at all, the strainer pot holds a stubborn air pocket, the pump gets noisy, and flow drops off, all with nothing visibly leaking.
Replacing it
O-rings harden, flatten and take a permanent set after a few seasons in hot, chlorinated water. If the old one comes out stiff, square edged or cracked, it has been the leak for a while. Fit the new o-ring with a pool rated silicone lubricant. Never use petroleum grease, which swells and degrades rubber. It is worth replacing this seal any time the housing is opened for other work.
