Water is dripping between my Hayward Super Pump and its motor. What do I replace?

The shaft seal, SPX1600Z2, which is the same part on all six single speed sizes. It comes in two halves, one riding on the back of the impeller and one pressed into the seal plate, so the motor slides out of the pump on its four housing bolts to reach it. Hayward's SPX1600TRA kit adds the housing gasket and diffuser gasket. Hayward asks for a leaking seal to be replaced at once, before water works into the motor bearings.

My Hayward Super Pump runs but barely moves water. Which impeller does it need?

Look for debris in the impeller before buying one, since a plugged or damaged impeller is on Hayward's list of causes for low flow. To replace it, go by the model: SP2600X5 takes SPX2600C, SP2605X7 SPX2605C, SP2607X10 SPX2607C, SP2610X15 SPX2610C, SP2615X20 SPX2615C and SP2621X25 SPX1621C. Hayward says to fit a new shaft seal with the new impeller.

Why won't my Hayward Super Pump prime after I cleaned the basket?

Check the lid first. Hayward's manual wants the strainer housing full of water, the cover gasket clean, sitting in its groove and greased with Jack's 327, and the lid locked down, because a self priming pump cannot pull water past an air leak on the suction side. On a Super Pump that gasket is SPX1600S under the square lid SPX1600D, and the two hand knobs and swivel nuts that hold the lid come as kit SPX1600PN.

Can I still get parts for an older Hayward Super Pump in the SP1600 series?

Yes. The square lid, the basket and the housing gasket are listed for the SP1600 and SP1600X as well as the SP2600X. For the inside of the pump, Hayward's drive train upgrade kits move an SP1600X onto SP2600X internals, each with a new impeller, diffuser and seal plate. They come in 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/2 and 2 HP, so choose the kit that matches the horsepower on the motor.

Can I replace just the motor on my Hayward Super Pump?

Yes. Hayward lists one threaded shaft motor per size, from SPX1600Z1M on the 1/2 HP SP2600X5 to SPX1620Z1M on the 2-1/2 HP SP2621X25, and each arrives with its slinger. The impeller unscrews from the old shaft while the shaft is held still and threads onto the new one. The seal plate, diffuser and mounting plate move across too, so only the motor itself changes.
